Introducing "Lisa Lights the Way", an
exclusive column by Lisa South |
Each Week Lisa Will Bring a Wealth of
Information to Newsletter ReadersYou may
have noticed some wonderful articles in the past
several newsletters by Lisa South. Lisa has agreed
to be an exclusive regular contributor to our
weekly newsletter. Published under the title,
"Lisa Lights the Way", her column will contain
tips and techniques to help you in your genealogy
research.
So far she has already done articles covering
topics from tips for finding your native American
ancestors to making the most of your visit to the
library to the proper way to evaluate genealogy
sources. You can look forward to her regularly
providing practical advice that can save you time
and make your efforts more fruitful.
We thought you might like to get to know a
little about Lisa and her involvement in
genealogy:
Lisa South has been involved in
genealogy since her college days, when she earned
her Certification as a Specialist in North
American Genealogical research from Brigham Young
University in 1976.
Since then, Lisa has worked as a professional
genealogist, researching family histories and
bringing families closer together. She taught
college level courses in genealogy for four years.
In addition, she has volunteered continuously in
local Family History Centers.
With her sister, Pamela, Lisa researched and
wrote a fascinating book recounting the family
history of her own pioneer ancestors. A Civil War
buff, Lisa is a voracious reader and especially
enjoys historical novels. She also loves doing
handwork and in her spare time, crochets special
leper bandages which she donates to the
humanitarian center of the LDS church.
Family has always been important to Lisa. She
maintains a close relationship with her parents
and six siblings. She is married, has four
children and is the beloved "Nana" to six
grandchildren.

Funeral Directors Records by
Lisa South, Certified Genealogist
Funeral
directors usually maintain private records which
are available at the discretion of the director.
Every experience I have had with funeral directors
has been positive and helpful, but you must
remember that these are their records!
Death records will give the name and address of
the funeral director. Obituaries usually give this
type of information as well. If you don’t know
which funeral home handled the funeral of your
ancestor, you can contact the ones in the area
that existed at the time of your ancestors death.
A helpful reference is the American Blue Book of
Funeral Directors, published in New York by the
National Funeral Directors Association. This book
contains the names of cemeteries organized by
location. It is available in most public and
genealogical libraries and often in your local
funeral homes.
Funeral records can be full of important
genealogical information, but as you evaluate
them, remember that the information is only as
accurate as the source. Sometimes the person who
gave the information to the funeral director did
not have the accurate information.
When writing to funeral directors, keep your
requests short and always include a
self-addressed, stamped envelope.
