What should I expect from OneGreatFamily as a Guest or
Subscriber?Even with all the benefits an online genealogy
service can provide, most researchers are still hesitant to
subscribe because it is a decision filled with questions and
uncertainty about trust and credibility. Trust is an important
concept whenever you provide any information to any commercial
entity. Trust is often more difficult to earn for companies that do
online business. Some considerations include how your information
will be used and the business model of the company receiving your
information. At OneGreatFamily, we build a foundation of trust by
working and researching together.
Online services must also
be easy to use, produce fast results, save time and money, be
convenient, and generate constant growth. At OneGreatFamily we make
sure our subscribers and guests are getting what they expect from an
online genealogy service by offering these benefits and more. We
help you to uncover the information you need in the quickest and
most economical way. OneGreatFamily is a service that was created to
help genealogists get through their "brick walls" and move forward
with the help of others from around the world. With OneGreatFamily
you are able to see others who are researching your family lines,
perform live collaboration with others, match and merge information,
and verify and expand your family tree.
As guests and
subscribers you should only expect the best from your online
genealogy service. OneGreatFamily is one of the few success stories
of online subscription services. With a growing subscription base,
the company has created a solid foundation on which it will build
for years to come. We hope that by using OneGreatFamily you have
discovered the real value of genealogy, which is finding out about
the people and places which made you who you are!

Can I view religious events in OneGreatFamily? As
you research your family, you will find that your ancestors belonged
to many different religions. Religious events are important to
genealogists because they provide detail about the beliefs of their
ancestors and because these events are often the only records by
which other information can be inferred or estimated. For example, a
christening date often provides the basis on which a birth date may
be estimated. The same is true of burial dates for death dates. The
OneGreatFamily Genealogy Browser offers four unique religious tabs
for recording, displaying and researching the religious events in
your ancestors' lives. These preferences can be turned on or off
using the Settings tab on the User Preferences box. You can access
the Settings tab by selecting [User Preferences] from the [File]
menu in the Genealogy Browser. Currently available religious tabs
include Catholic, LDS, Jewish, and Protestant.
After
selecting one or more religious preference, a tab for each religion
selected will become visible when editing an individual's
information in the Genealogy Browser. The edit screen is activated
by clicking on the selected individual in the Handprint View or by
double-clicking on any other individual in the family
tree.
The Catholic tab offers text fields to record event
information for baptism, first communion, confirmation, and last
rites. The proper naming of these events will help others know where
additional information may be found.
The Jewish tab features
information for barmitzva/batmitzva, circumcision (for males), and
religious name information. A checkbox also allows you to highlight
if the ancestor was a holocaust victim or survivor.
The
Protestant tab contains date and place information for the baptisms
and confirmations of your ancestors.
The LDS tab makes temple
ordinance information available to members of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. These events include baptism, child
sealing, and endowments. A "Busy in Temple" marker allows you to
alert other members that you are actively doing the temple work for
a given ancestor.
Selecting the LDS preference also provides
a user with new icons in the Genealogy Browser toolbar. Clicking on
the "Qualified for Temple" icon will display temple icons next to
ancestors with enough information for processing through
TempleReady. Clicking on the "Ordinance Indicator" icon will display
green lines where ancestors have been sealed together and square
boxes around ancestors whose individual ordinances have been
completed. Clicking on the "Export Individuals to GEDCOM" icon will
allow you to export a GEDCOM file that only contains those
individuals for whom temple work can be completed.

Helpful Tips on Last NamesLast names are the key
to genealogical research. Over time, they can be spelled in
different ways, surrendered at marriage, and sometimes changed for
other reasons. So if you want to find your family's history, you
need to learn to search effectively for your family last names. The
first thing to remember is that in times gone by, people worried
less about consistent spelling; William Shakespeare, for example,
spelled his name half a dozen different ways. So don't be surprised
if you discover that a simple name like "Hardy" was spelled
"Hardie," "Hardee," "Hardey," and "Haredy" by different relatives,
sometimes in the same immediate family.
Names translated from
other languages into English can be even more confusing. "Longacre"
and "Longenecker" are variant names for the same family.
When researching family names, the best tactic is to look
for similar consonants; the vowels often tend to shift and change.
That is the principle of the Soundex searching system, which can
help you discover ancestors you might otherwise have missed.
One useful strategy is to keep a list of last names you are
looking for. You can list whole lines or specific individuals you're
searching for. When you're talking with other genealogy researchers,
ask them about your family names. Look them up in various indexes to
historical documents. When you keep your eyes open for a family last
name, you may be surprised at the treasures you find.
You're
not alone in searching for your last names. At OneGreatFamily.com,
you may find other researchers who have discovered important
branches of your family tree. A single new link can help you
discover thousands of ancestors and entire new lines. Home of the
original online family tree, OneGreatFamily.com can help you find
your family's place in the world. A single new link can help you
discover thousands of ancestors and entire new lines.
