Try Out The Social Security Death Index at
OneGreatFamily!Last week OneGreatFamily announced the
launch of the Social Security Death Index. This new database, which
includes records for more than 70 million individuals, can be
accessed using the search form on our homepage. Once you search for
a name, your initial results will show you how many instances of
that name occur as matches in OneGreatFamily and how many instances
occur in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI). Each database is
linked from the results page. The new Social Security Index
increases your ability to find your ancestors at OneGreatFamily and
demonstrates our increasing efforts to help you in your genealogy
research.
Make sure you take advantage of the new SSDI on
OneGreatFamily to help you discover even more ancestors and build
your family tree! Visit
OneGreatFamily to find your ancestors in the SSDI.

What are "Hints" and how do they help me merge data?
A merge allows you to add new data to your OneGreatFamily
Genealogy Browser from outside sources. When new information is
added to our database, it is compared with your own research. Where
matches occur, graphical indicators appear in your Genealogy
BrowserTM. These symbols are called "Hints".
Gen-Bulbs - Light bulb symbols that alert you to
matched data that has been culled from outside sources.
Gen-Bolts - Lightning bolt symbols which identify
where conflicts exist between your research and other data gathered
on the same individual.
Viewing Hints: To use these
valuable tools, start by selecting the "View Hints" icon on your
Genealogy Browser Toolbar, select the "Gen-Bulbs" and "Gen-Bolts"
icons. This will display a Gen-bolt or Gen-bulb icon on every
individual in your Starfield that has new information or a conflict.
Select the individual with the Gen-bolt or Gen-bulb icon, and you
can then click the hints to view the new information. You can also
view the information by clicking on the individual's name in
Handprint view.
When you click on the "View Hints" button,
you are presented with another window similar to the "Edit an
Individual" screen. Be sure to check each of the thumb tabs across
the top of the window. There may be more than one match category.
Where there are possible matches, arrows display that allow you to
merge the information into your view. These matches are optional and
you can choose not to merge them until you are satisfied that the
data is correct.

How do I print out my family tree using
OneGreatFamily?Genealogists have always craved and appreciated
ways to share their research with others. Printing has often filled
that need. Printing is also a great way to backup and record your
genealogy. For many of us, our progress isn't realized until we have
successfully printed hard copies of records, pedigrees, pictures,
and other genealogical data. Sharing and reviewing printed documents
has always been one of the best parts of genealogy. We hope this
information will help you when exploring all of the printing options
offered with OneGreatFamily.
Printing the Starfield View:
Before printing the Starfield (Pedigree in the
Genealogy Browser), use the customizing scrollbars to adjust the
pedigree to the desired size for your printout. The Zoom, Font,
and Magnify scrollbars, found on the far right side of the tool
bar, can help you customize the Starfield in order to print
exactly what you want. You can view the death information by
holding the Alt button as you zoom out. Also, don't forget to use
Print Preview (found in the File Menu of the Genealogy Browser) to
view exactly how the information will print on paper.
Remember that you can print as many or as few generations
as you want. When printing the Starfield, you can print what we
commonly call a wall chart. This means that you print your
Starfield large enough to fill an entire wall! If your printer
uses standard 8 1/2" by 11" paper, a wall chart can be created by
taping the pages together.
Note: You can edit your User
Preferences by selecting User Preferences from the File menu and
then opening the Settings tab. In order to enable the Font
scrollbar, you will need to change your Computer Expertise Level
to Intermediate. You can enable the Magnify Scroll bar by changing
this setting to Advanced. The Settings tab also allows you to
choose the number of generations to display in the
Starfield.
Printing Genealogy Forms:
In case you are not already aware, two genealogy forms
have recently been added to help you organize your genealogy. The
Standard Pedigree is a form that will display the individual
currently selected in the Handprint, and four additional
generations after that individual. The Family Group displays the
details for the family of the individual currently selected in the
Handprint.
You can access these forms by selecting any
desired individual within the Genealogy Browser. Once the desired
individual has been selected in the Handprint, you can choose
Standard Pedigree or Family Group form from the View pull-down
menu.
You can then print out the form by simply going to
File and Print. You can also print blank family group sheets or
pedigree charts from OneGreatFamily by visiting our Genealogy
Tools page. These forms are available as HTML or PDF documents.
Printing Biographies and Multimedia:
Remember that you can also print documents and
pictures stored in the Biography and Multimedia sections of each
individual record. These can be printed using the program that you
use to view these items (such as a word processor, an image
viewer, or a multimedia player).
