Success at annual UGA Conference!
OneGreatFamily attended the annual conference of the Utah
Geneaogical Association in Salt Lake City last weekend. Many avid
genealogists stopped by our booth to learn about OneGreatFamily and
how the service provides rich, ever-expanding information on
genealogy lines.
Many of those present took special interest
in how OneGreatFamily, by matching and merging duplicate
information, provides researchers with access to collateral lines of
ancestors and descendants. This collateral information is useful to
provide migration and relationship clues that help fill gaps in a
family tree.
Those attending the conference were amazed at
the ability to view an entire family tree at once and to view all
available information for an ancestor without looking up multiple
records or gedcom files. Researchers also appreciated the ability to
collaborate with others on common ancestors and see who had
submitted the data to OneGreatFamily.
Look for OneGreatFamily
to be attending other genealogy conferences in the near future. We
look forward to meeting more OneGreatFamily members at each
conference we attend. Thank you to all of those that stopped by our
booth. We'd like to meet each one of our members in person if we
could!

Alternate Spellings for Common First Names
OneGreatFamily continues to receive hundreds of submissions
for alternate name spellings for common first and last names!
OneGreatFamily continually processes these submissions, so most of
the entries are now available, improving your ability to find ALL of
your ancestors that are available at OneGreatFamily.
When
alternate spellings are accepted for names in your family tree, your
experience on OneGreatFamily will likely improve in two ways:
- You will see alternate spellings of your names in search
results
- You may receive new hints or merges in your family tree based
on the alternate spellings
This new matching method
is extremely powerful when combined with the millions of new names
that are added to OneGreatFamily each month. The staff of
OneGreatFamily is now taking initiative to help identify alternate
spellings for common names to further expedite the creation of this
increasingly valuable resource. If you know of any alternate
spellings for common names, you can continue to submit them through
our Genealogy
Names Alternates Lookup tool.

How does OneGreatFamily offer consistent, reliable
data?by Chelsea Beattie - Marketing
Manager
Are you tired of having a date in your tree that
is formatted in a way you can't understand? OneGreatFamily now has
many features that now help to standardize the style of submitted
data. One such feature is our new standardized date feature that we
launched earlier in the year. Now, every site visitor is able to
submit dates in a format that everyone will be able to understand.
Each time a non-standard date is entered into the system, we will
now prompt you to enter it in a standard format. We have also
created standardized abbreviations, such as "ABT"(about),
"BEF"(before), and "AFT"(after).
If the individual does not
enter a standardized date, you may also verify the date through
collaboration. We offer our collaboration feature to provide you
with the contact information of the individual who submitted the
data in question. If their information is formatted in a way that is
hard to understand, you have the option to contact them and find
where they received their research findings or what their data was
meant to say.
OneGreatFamily encourages all those who submit
data to use the style options we offer. As your genealogy service,
OneGreatFamily is constantly trying to develop new features that
will make it possible for you to not have to deal with these style
issues.
