feature - Surname Index with Surname Pages
We've already been making some helpful changes
to the Surname Index!
Last time we told you how to access surnames by
clicking on the link in the footer (the links
near the bottom of the page) located on each page
of OneGreatFamily.com. This new index is a way
to browse through the names available on OneGreatFamily
and see what information is available.
Typically, you'll see birth and death information
if such information is available. Subscribers
can also use this index and add source information,
submit biographies, or upload photos for their
favorite ancestors.
You can go directly to see the listing for any
surname by typing the following into your browser
address:
http://www.onegreatfamily.com/surname/surname
(in this example, the last surname would be the
last name you are researching)
Here's a sample for the last name of "Johnson:"
http://www.onegreatfamily.com/surname/johnson
We've also made it easier to navigate to any specific
list of names by reducing the number of clicks
it takes to find your information. Here's what
you do now:
1. Visit the Surname Index page by
clicking on the link at the footer (bottom of
the page). 2. Select the beginning
letter of the last name you're searching.
3. You'll see a list of two-letter combinations.
Click on the first two letters of the surname
you're searching. 4. You'll see a list
of three-letter combinationsl. Click on first
three letters of the surnames you're searching.
5. At this point, unless the name is not
in our database, you'll be able to see the exact
name you want. Click on the name you've chosen
and you'll see every name in our database under
that surname.
The new Surname Index will be updated on a weekly
basis. Subscribers can see immediate updates through
Genealogy BrowserTM after logging in.

Tips
and Tricks - How to export a descendancy
Exporting your genealogy is a great way to back
up your information and will prove helpful if
you ever need to share GEDCOM files with others.
1. Select "File" in your menu bar.
2. Select "Export View to File" to
create a GEDCOM file. The export screen provides
you with a number of options to determine how
much information you want included in your export.
Select all of your specifications as outlined
next. 3. Ancestry/Descendancy
- Your anchor likely has ancestry and descendancy.
This option allows you to decide which you want
to include in the export. In this tip, we're exporting
by descendancy, so you'd want to be sure that
button is pushed. 2. Export to
Path - Identify where on your local hard drive
you would like to save the file. We recommend
that you create a folder called "Genealogy" in
your My Documents folder. Use the Genealogy folder
for all your GEDCOM files. 3.
Number of Generations - Choose the number of generations
you would like included in the export. Remember
that if you choose a certain number of generations,
this will include all of those generations both
in depth and breadth of your anchor view.
4. Include Private Date - Check the
box to include any individuals that you have marked
as private. 5. Once you are satisfied
with your selections click "OK" to export your
file. Subscribe to OneGreatFamily to support
